If you're suffering from an ankle fracture, professional attention shouldn't wait. Fractures may worsen over time and can make completing everyday activities incredibly difficult. See your specialist for treatment and guidance through the healing process.

As people age, their feet often experience gradual changes that can lead to discomfort. Years of standing, walking, and wearing unsupportive shoes may contribute to problems like bunions, hammertoes, and fallen arches. Heel pain from plantar fasciitis or strain in the Achilles tendon can develop after years of activity, especially without proper foot support. Thickened skin areas such as corns and calluses often form due to ongoing pressure and friction. Toenail issues, including fungal infections, may also appear more frequently over time. Conditions like arthritis can cause stiffness, swelling, and joint pain in the feet and ankles, making daily activities more difficult. Caring for your feet as you age can help prevent many of these concerns. If you are experiencing changes in your feet or ongoing discomfort, it is suggested you visit a podiatrist for evaluation and treatment recommendations.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

Facts About Gout

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints, most often affecting the big toe. This condition results from the body producing too much uric acid or not removing it effectively. Common causes of gout include a diet high in purines, certain medications, and underlying health conditions. Risk factors include obesity, age, family history, and excessive alcohol consumption. Symptoms often involve sudden, intense joint pain, redness, swelling, and warmth. A podiatrist can help manage gout by diagnosing the condition, offering pain relief strategies, and guiding long-term foot care. If you experience joint pain in the foot, it is suggested that you seek podiatric advice to relieve discomfort and prevent future flare-ups.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.

Symptoms

  • Intense Joint Pain - Usually around the large joint of your big toe, and it most severe within the first four to twelve hours
  • Lingering Discomfort - Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks
  • Inflammation and Redness -Affected joints may become swollen, tender, warm and red
  • Limited Range of Motion - May experience a decrease in joint mobility

Risk Factors

  • Genetics - If family members have gout, you’re more likely to have it
  • Medications - Diuretic medications can raise uric acid levels
  • Gender/Age - Gout is more common in men until the age of 60. It is believed that estrogen protects women until that point
  • Diet - Eating red meat and shellfish increases your risk
  • Alcohol - Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk
  • Obesity - Obese people are at a higher risk for gout

Prior to visiting your podiatrist to receive treatment for gout, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you have gout you should write down your symptoms--including when they started and how often you experience them, important medical information you may have, and any questions you may have. Writing down these three things will help your podiatrist in assessing your specific situation so that he or she may provide the best route of treatment for you.

Diabetic neuropathy often begins in the feet, where nerve damage can cause numbness, tingling, burning, or sharp pain. Some people lose all feeling in their feet, which can make injuries go unnoticed and lead to serious complications. Neuropathy is more likely to develop in people who have had diabetes for a long time or who have poor blood sugar control. Other risk factors include high blood pressure, excess weight, smoking, and complications in the eyes or kidneys. Because neuropathy in the feet may not cause symptoms right away, many people do not realize there is a problem until an ulcer forms or changes in foot shape occur. Muscle weakness from nerve damage can lead to hammertoes, bunions, or other deformities that increase pressure on the skin. A podiatrist can help by testing for signs of neuropathy, monitoring foot health, and offering treatment to prevent further damage. If you have complications from diabetes that are affecting your feet, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Neuropathy

Neuropathy can be a potentially serious condition, especially if it is left undiagnosed. If you have any concerns that you may be experiencing nerve loss in your feet, consult with one our of podiatrists from The Foot and Ankle Specialists. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment for neuropathy.

What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:

  • Numbness
  • Sensation loss
  • Prickling and tingling sensations
  • Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
  • Muscle weakness

Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.

Treatment

To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.

Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.

Proper footwear also helps prevent foot pain, fatigue, and musculoskeletal strain. A podiatrist can recommend the best slip-resistant shoes for individual foot types and treat various foot ailments related to demanding work. If you have endured a foot or ankle injury, possibly from wearing the wrong type of shoes, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can offer appropriate treatment solutions.

Working on Your Feet

Standing on your feet for long periods of time can cause stress and pain in your feet. Your whole body may experience change in terms of posture, back pain, bunions, callouses and or plantar warts. There are ways to avoid these conditions with proper foot care, smart choices and correct posture.

Positive Changes

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

With a little bit of this information and knowing more about foot health, you will notice changes. Foot stretches and proper footwear will help with pain and prevent further issues.

Stress fractures are small cracks in the bone that often develop from repeated impact or overuse. They tend to appear in the feet and lower legs, especially in athletes, runners, or people who suddenly increase their activity level. Wearing shoes that lack adequate support, skipping rest days, or having poor bone health can all raise the risk. These injuries may begin with a dull ache that worsens over time, especially during weight-bearing activities. Preventing stress fractures involves building up activity gradually, choosing footwear with proper support, and including rest in your routine. Nutrition also plays a role. Strong bones need enough calcium, vitamin D, and overall nourishment. If foot or ankle pain continues during movement or returns with activity, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Activities where too much pressure is put on the feet can cause stress fractures. To learn more, contact one our of podiatrists from The Foot and Ankle Specialists. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep your pain free and on your feet.

Dealing with Stress Fractures of the Foot and Ankle

Stress fractures occur in the foot and ankle when muscles in these areas weaken from too much or too little use.  The feet and ankles then lose support when walking or running from the impact of the ground. Since there is no protection, the bones receive the full impact of each step. Stress on the feet can cause cracks to form in the bones, thus creating stress fractures.

What Are Stress Fractures?

Stress fractures occur frequently in individuals whose daily activities cause great impact on the feet and ankles. Stress factors are most common among:

  • Runners
  • People affected with Osteoporosis
  • Tennis or basketball players
  • Gymnasts
  • High impact workouts

Symptoms

Pain from the fractures occur in the area of the fractures and can be constant or intermittent. It will often cause sharp or dull pain with swelling and tenderness. Engaging in any kind of activity which involves high impact will aggravate pain.
